Whether support is needed for development, daily functioning, independence, or participation in meaningful activities, care is designed around what matters most in each person’s day-to-day life.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapists (OTs) are trained in both physical and mental health and can offer a wide range of services tailored to an individual’s needs following injury, illness, developmental disorders, and/or psychological dysfunction. Occupational therapists support clients with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities in participating in daily activities and occupations. These can range from basic self-care tasks like bathing and dressing to more complex activities like work, hobbies, and socializing. The goal of occupational therapy is to help people develop or regain the skills they need to perform their occupations, develop new habits and routines, and modify environments or activities that prevent them from engaging in their desired occupations.

When should I visit an Occupational Therapist?

Seeing an Occupational Therapist can help with:

  • recovery and return to work after an injury or illness

  • chronic pain

  • sensory processing issues ( adult + pediatric OT)

  • neurological disorders

  • developmental disabilities

  • if you're struggling with daily activities

  • children who are picky eaters (pediatric OT)

  • restricted feeding, including ARFID (pediatric OT)

  • toileting challenges and constipation (pediatric OT)

  • school-related challenges (pediatric OT)

  • Developmental Coordination Disorder (pediatric OT)

What should I expect from an Occupational Therapist appointment?

During an Occupational Therapy appointment, your OT and you or your caregiver set goals together to build skills to achieve independence in the areas of self-care, work or productivity and leisure interests. Your OT may start by asking about daily functioning and activities, then analyze those activities, which may lead to improving physical capacity, as well as adapting activities, using modified equipment, and addressing executive functioning and sensory processing.

The approach is holistic and supports people of all ages in doing better physically, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually. Your Occupational therapist uses a person-centred approach to identify and address limitations that may be hindering your ability to perform meaningful activities.
